Snow College Hosts Science Olympiad

More than 300 high school and middle school students competed in the event

February 27, 2023 – Ephraim, UT – 330 high school and middle school students from 20 schools across the state of Utah came to Snow College on Saturday, February 25, 2023 to compete in the regional Science Olympiad competition.

The Utah Science Olympiad is composed of two invitational competitions, two regional competitions, and one state competition. Snow College hosts the largest regional competition in the state. The top three winners of each event at this regional competition receive gold, silver, and bronze medals. Coaches use these rankings to compile their best team to compete on the state level, with state winners being invited to the national competition, held at Wichita State University.

Consisting of 23 events for each the high school and junior high divisions, hosting the event is no small task. Nearly 100 Snow College faculty, staff, and students worked together to ensure that the event ran smoothly and the students had a positive experience. Volunteers worked to preregister students, run each event, and host an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the day.

The Snow College Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics hosts the annual event. Always on the lookout for opportunities to bring STEM experiences to school-aged youth, the division welcomes the chance to help get kids excited about fields in STEM. Division Dean Kevin Sorensen said, “We are proud to sponsor an event that helps young participants gain an in-depth understanding of scientific principles and other valuable skills. These young students spend many hours learning and building skills that will help them be successful in college and in life.”
