Students in grades 7-12 come from across the state to compete
March 19, 2024–EPHRAIM, UT – The Snow College Mathematics Department hosted junior and high school students from across the state for its annual math contest. The competition, now in its 46th year, brings students together in their shared love of math and gives them the opportunity to flex their intellectual muscles.
The contest is open to students in grades 7-12. Once on campus, the students are divided by grade. The Junior Division students (grades 7-9) take a one-hour, 20 question exam. Senior Division students (grades 10-12) take a longer, two-hour exam consisting of 40 questions. The tests are carefully designed to stretch the most advanced of students, while still remaining accessible for intermediate math students.
Putting on this contest is no small feat. As soon as one competition ends, the department begins their preparations for next year’s event. Faculty members submit questions to be considered for the exams, then the questions go through a three-month review process before the tests are finalized just weeks before competition day. On the day of the contest, math faculty, staff, and Snow students all work together to ensure the younger students have a positive experience while on campus.
While the exams are scored, the students are given a tour of the campus and gather together for lunch. The award ceremony is held after lunch, where winners receive a certificate, a prize, and a coveted “Math Jock” t-shirt. In addition, the top three winners of the Senior Division are each awarded a one-year, full tuition scholarship to Snow College.
Mathematics Department Chair Steve Zollinger said, "The Math Department at Snow College is always so excited to host students from schools all over Utah for our annual Math Contest. The contest provides an incredible opportunity for these students to compete and connect with the best minds in the state. All the many hours preparing for and running the contest are so worth it as we witness the determination, intelligence, and sheer joy from the students, coaches, teachers, and parents who attend."
