July 30, 2024–EPHRAIM, UT – Snow College announced today that Jay Olsen’s interim position as Vice President for Technical Education will become a permanent appointment effective August 1. Olsen has served in this capacity since July 2022 and has worked at Snow College since 1997.

During Olsen’s nearly three-decade career, he has demonstrated strong leadership, a deep interest in student success, and a sincere desire to support and enhance rural Utah. As a faculty member, Olsen greatly expanded the agriculture program, advised student clubs, hosted thousands of Future Farmers of America during the annual field day, and taught approximately 500 families across central Utah how to better manage their farm operations. He collaborated with colleagues in his division dean role and has led his team to secure approximately $6 million in grants or other external sources. In his current role, Olsen has forged important relationships with local businesses and industry partners and elevated the college’s impact through economic development and outreach efforts.

Olsen is known for his expertise and personal attributes across the state. Kim Ziebarth, Associate Commissioner for Technical Education for the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) said, “Jay is a trusted and respected member of the [statewide] instructional officers committee and is solution-oriented with attention to quality, relevant instruction, and care of our students and faculty.” USHE Assistant Commissioner for Technical Education, Will Pierce, concurred that Olsen has a “strong dedication to technical education, concern and support for students, and commitment to collaborate with other institutions.” Additionally, Olsen was recognized as the 2021 top college/university teacher by Utah’s Best of State organization and has received numerous other recognitions, including a prestigious award from the Rural Community College Alliance.

Of this announcement, which comes after a leadership vetting process, including interviews with internal and external stakeholders, President Stacee Y. McIff said, “We are truly fortunate to have Jay at Snow College. His ability to lead and develop both people and programs is second to none, and I have every confidence in him.”

Olsen and his wife, Lauri, met as students at Snow College, have four children, and live in Manti. After graduating from Snow College, Olsen completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Brigham Young University and spent time working with ranches in Utah, Idaho, and Florida before returning to Snow College to teach. He enjoys working on projects with his family and serving his church and community.
