His book, “Hymns of Silence,” pays homage to his Gunnison Valley upbringing
October 29, 2024–EPHRAIM, UT – Dr. Charles Inouye, professor of Japanese Literature at Tufts University, will be speaking on campus on Friday, November 1, 2024 at 7:00 pm. The presentation will take place in Founders Hall, located on the top floor of the Noyes building.
Dr. Charles Inouye grew up in Gunnison, Utah, and is a graduate of Gunnison Valley High School. He attended Brigham Young University, Stanford, Kobe University, and Harvard. He returns home to Sanpete County to read from his “Hymns of Silence,” a recently published collection of short stories. These stories pay homage to the silence of Gunnison Valley.
Dr. Inouye said, “All five hymns grew from my need to address the silence that I encountered growing up in Sanpete Country. Even though I’ve now lived more of my life in New England than in Utah, I still can’t separate myself from the stillness of Gunnison Valley, which has both haunted and comforted me.”
