Catalog Description: This course provides students with individual woodwind instruction. Private instruction is required of music majors each semester during college. Music majors receive 12 50-minute lessons during the semester. The course is repeatable for credit. This course develops a student's technical, interpretive, sight reading, pedagogical and improvisational skills as well as developing a student's understanding of the history and repertory of the specific instrument/voice. A jury is required at the end of the semester. The jury accounts for 20% of the grade for the course. An additional fee is required. Repeatable for credit.

Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor

Justification: As an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), Snow College is required to provide competent private instruction for music majors in all vocal and instrumental specialties. Private instruction is required of music majors in four-year music degree programs and must appear on student transcripts. This course offers an excellent opportunity for all Snow College students to develop musicianship and performance skills. Courses of this type are taught at all NASM accredited institutions in Utah.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Private lesson students will develop good practice habits, and keep track of practice hours using a practice journal or log sheet. Students will communicate practice habits to the professor during lessons. Professors will encourage and support good practice habits with verbal and written feedback.

Private lesson students will learn proper body posture. Professors will assess body posture at every lesson and every performance. Verbal and written feedback will be provided to students.

Private lesson students will learn proper performing technique. Technique will be addressed in weekly lessons and at all performances. Professor will provide verbal and written feedback.

Private lesson students will learn and refine motor skills required for performance. Development of motor skills will be addressed and assessed in every lesson and at all performances. Professor will provide verbal and written feedback.

Private lesson students will learn musical literature (appropriate to skill level) from a wide variety of stylistic periods and genres. Professors are responsible to assign literature appropriate to the student and to provide both written and verbal feedback on the student's performance.

Private lesson students will memorize music for performance (where appropriate). This will be assessed through progress in lessons as well as recital, masterclass and jury performances through verbal feedback when appropriate.

Private lesson students will demonstrate integration of the above listed skills as well as well-developed artistic expression. This will be assessed through lesson progress and recital, masterclass and jury performances. Verbal and written feedback will be provided to the student.


Content:
This course will help students develop professional woodwind playing skills. Students will practice technical exercises designed to develop the proper embouchure, tongue, and finger technique. Exercises will help develop excellent tone quality, increase range, and promote accurate intonation. Students will study selected repertoire for their instrument and develop performing skills. Repertoire selected will be tailored to the students’ level of technical and artistic preparedness.

Students in private music instruction courses are assessed in the following ways (percentages are approximate):

Attendance at lessons  30 to 40%

Documented practice hours  20 to 30%

Master class participation and performance  15 to 30%

Recital participation and performance 10 to 20%

Jury participation and performance 15 to 30%


Representative Text and/or Supplies:
Repertoire varies widely from student to student in accordance with individual capabilities and developmental needs.

Representative etudes are Rose, Baermann, Ferling, Barrett, Weissenborn, etc.

Representative repertoire includes Mozart sonatas and concertos, Bach sonatas, French conservatory pieces, etc.

Repertoire is available from a wide variety of sources including online websites that provide free download or in printed form from individual publishers as needed.


Pedagogy Statement:
Private lessons are individualized instruction. What is taught will vary depending on the needs of the individual student. Professors will model proper technique. Students will imitate the professor. The professor will verbally explain new concepts, allow the student to apply the material, and the teacher will verbally assess the student's progress.
