Catalog Description: Chamber ensemble groups for woodwind players. Available to music majors and non-music majors who wish to develop their musicianship and small-ensemble performance skills. This course is repeatable for credit.

Justification: This course will provide students with opportunities to explore and experience standard woodwind ensemble literature. Courses like this are taught at NASM-accredited institutions both in the state and across the country. This is similar to brass chamber, percussion ensemble, and string chamber music courses.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn the standard woodwind ensemble literature from the Western European and American cultures.  Students will be assessed through class participation, rehearsal preparedness, and concert performance.

Students will be able to respond more sensitively to a greater spectrum of artistic works because of their firsthand experiences with the musical works studied in this course.  This will be assessed through class participation, and concert performance.


Content:
Students will learn the standard woodwind ensemble literature from the Western European and American cultures. In addition, students will be taught small ensemble performance techniques.While the repertoire for this course is necessarily drawn from a few relatively narrow cultural traditions, effort will be made to help students of all backgrounds understand and connect with those traditions and understand their influences and impacts across cultures.

Representative Text and/or Supplies:
No traditional textbook is required for this class. Musical scores and parts will be provided from the music library.


Pedagogy Statement:
Students are placed in small ensembles based on available repertoire, student skill-level, and other factors. A faculty coach is assigned to each ensemble. Coaches suggest ways that students can improve their performance, and students work together to solve performance challenges. Each student in an ensemble has an equally important role in the final outcome. All students will be treated with respect and equity.
