Catalog Description: Students will gain ensemble experience on a variety of percussion instruments. Available only to music majors who are pursuing the B. Mus. degree or by permission of instructor. Audition required. This course my be repeated for credit.

Justification: This course will provide students with opportunities to explore and experience standard percussion ensemble literature. Courses like this are taught at all NASM accredited institutions both in the state and across the country. This is similar to brass chamber, woodwind chamber, and string chamber music courses.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of each semester of this course, students will be able to accurately perform the rhythms, melodies and harmonies of the music selected by the director This will be assessed in formative assessments through performance and rehearsal and sectionals, submission of documented practice time, and group feedback and critique of performance recordings.

The student will perform essential skills as part of a section, including, proper intonation blend and balance and show improvement in both speed and accuracy of literature learning as measured by small group assessment. This will be assessed in formative assessments through performance and rehearsal and sectionals, submission of documented practice time, and group feedback and critique of performance recordings.

The student will understand the music in its historical setting as well as the stylistic, expressive, and formal qualities associated with the particular era of music history. This will be assessed in formative assessments through performance and rehearsal and sectionals, submission of documented practice time, and group feedback and critique of performance recordings.

The student will communicate the understanding which they have gained to their audiences. This will be assessed in formative assessments through performance and rehearsal and sectionals, submission of documented practice time, and group feedback and critique of performance recordings.


Content:
Students will learn the standard percussion ensemble literature from the contemporary era. In addition, students will be taught correct sticking and hand techniques on a variety of percussion instruments. They will also learn a variety of styles of music including:
• African;
• Afro-Cuban;
• Jazz; Brazilian;
• and other South American styles.

Key Performance Indicators:
Students in instrumental music performance courses are assessed in the following ways:

Participation Rates - Attendance at class sessions; 10 to 30%

Written Assignments: Practice Logs; 10 to 20%

Presentation/Performance – sectional rehearsal participation and performance; 20 to 40%

Presentation/Performance - Concert participation and performance; 20 to 40%

Group Project - Participation in concert recording review and critique; 20 to 40%
