Catalog Description: This ensemble provides students completing the bachelor of music degree with an opportunity to synthesize skills learned in required courses, including music theory, commercial arranging, music technology, private lessons, & music business. The course is required once during the junior year and once during the senior year.

Repeatable: Yes.


Prerequisites: Audition required.

Justification: Students will have an opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice prior to entering the workforce.


Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Students will perform contemporary music from a variety of styles and genres. This outcome will be assessed via performance at weekly rehearsals, recordings, and various performances throughout the semester.

2. Students will apply knowledge gained in audio production and music technology courses to the production and performance of concerts by this ensemble. This outcome will be assessed via performance at weekly rehearsals, recordings, and various performances throughout the semester.

3. Students will apply transcription, composition, scoring, and arranging skills to create charts for this ensemble.  This outcome will be assessed via performance at weekly rehearsals, recordings, and various performances throughout the semester.

4. Students will apply music business skills to the promotion of events for this ensemble.  This outcome will be assessed via performance at weekly rehearsals, recordings, and various performances throughout the semester.


Content:

Key Performance Indicators:
Students will perform selected music with accuracy, musicality, and authenticity.  20 to 30%

Students will ensure the set up and proper implementation of audio production software and hardware in rehearsals and performances.  20 to 30%

Students will produce accurate and readable charts for the ensemble.  20 to 30%

Students will book and promote and manage performances by the ensemble.  20 to 30%

Pedagogy Statement:
This course is a student driven, faculty mentored experience designed to give students experience in the operation of a contemporary popular music ensemble. Student leadership roles are assigned and rotated. The faculty role is one of advisement and quality assurance.
