Catalog Description: This course introduces students to editing digital images. Students will develop skills in photo manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. Students will also learn different editing methods through projects and examples.

Justification: This course provides the student with experience in digital photo manipulation at an introductory level with emphasis placed on uses in a business environment. There is an ongoing need for employees who are skilled in editing and retouching photographs and general graphic design. These skills are often called upon in a business office to create images for media in an increasingly visually rich competitive marketing and communications environment.This course is used as a business elective, is recommended for students taking social media marketing, and is useful to students who are starting their own business ventures.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate the ability to navigate to and properly utilize desired tools within the Photoshop interface. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Demonstrate the ability to make and manipulate selections. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Demonstrate the ability to use layers effectively. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Demonstrate the ability to create and/or edit images using common tools and processes such as masks, adjustments, layer properties, brushes, vector drawing techniques, typographic tools, cropping, resizing, and so forth. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Demonstrate the ability to use some advanced features such as Generative AI Workflows, Contextual Task Bar, etc. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Demonstrate an understanding of the utilization of graphic design, and particularly the tools/processes in this course in business communications/marketing. Students will be able to demonstrate this outcome as evaluated through participation in in-class activities, assignments, projects, and/or exams.

Content:
In accordance with the diversity of students, backgrounds, and interests, this course encourages a broad array of motif selection as the basis of the following content applications:Foundational art/design principles and elementsGetting to know the work area Working with selections Layer basics Painting and editing Using masks and channels Retouching photos Utilizing advanced layer techniques and compositingCreating special effects Preparing images for Web publication Ensuring accurate color Business applications for tools and processes

Student performance is assessed in the following areas:

Projects and/or exams 40 to 70%

Participation and assignments 10 to 30%

Pedagogy Statement:
Through the use of various materials and activities as well as self-selected projects and personalized content, this course supports a broad range of student learning styles. In-class activities utilize inclusive teaching methods intended to create an environment where all students feel valued and supported. Student learning outcomes are achieved through participating in discussion and demonstration, as well as completing project-based assignments requiring the use of Photoshop tools and techniques requisite with the course content.
