Catalog Description: This course is designed for students to develop effective oral presentation skills, allowing for increased poise and self-confidence. Students learn marketable skills such as how to integrate presentation and technical skills to create dynamic and professional presentations that may be presented online and/or to live audiences.

The course teaches students how to perform audience analysis for planning a well-received presentation with a clear purpose. Students will be given multiple opportunities to plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate presentations. Strategies for overcoming presentation anxiety and relaxation techniques will be explored.

Justification: Effective communication and presentation skills are very important in the business world. Additionally, skilled application of presentation software is necessary for many professionals as they conduct online meetings, presentations, demonstrations, etc. Students will be given the opportunity to master both software and presentation skills.

The course fulfills a core requirement for the Associate of Science Business degree.


Student Learning Outcomes:
A student can effectively research presentation topics and create dynamic, well-planned presentations. Students will be able to create presentations based on findings from basic research about industry best practices and criteria established through class assignments. The presentations should include a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Students will be assessed through assignments, exams, and presentations. Feedback will be provided by peers and the instructor.

A student can create attractive, professional looking, and inviting presentations. Students will learn how to create presentations that incorporate the proper use of design. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of appropriate colors and fonts for presentations, slide design, and layout. Students will be assessed through assignments, exams, and presentations. Feedback will be provided by peers and the instructor.

A student can deliver a professional presentation properly utilizing oral communication skills. Students will learn the necessary steps to prepare for oral presentations to be delivered to live and online audiences. They will also learn strategies to overcome presentation anxiety and be prepared to apply concepts learned in class to real-world situations. Emphasis will be placed on conveying a professional image with appropriate business attire, voice, and body language. Students will be assessed through assignments, exams, and presentations. Feedback will be provided by peers and the instructor.

Students can create a capstone signature assignment.  Students will choose an existing business or a business the student would like to start in the future. They will create and give a presentation based on the details of what this business does or will do to be successful. Feedback will be provided by peers and the instructor.

Pedagogy Statement:
This course will include hands-on activities and assignments, research, exams, and written reflection to improve public speaking and presentation skills for both live and online audiences.
