Catalog Description: This course will give students the chance to learn the style and advanced techniques of performing in a Music Theater production. In addition to regular rehearsals in class, there will be improvisation, movement and acting exercises, analysis of performance, discussions about what is expected of professional singers/actors in terms of pre-rehearsal preparation, learn singer-specific rehearsal and performance techniques, and collaboration in the culminating Music Theatre performances.

Prerequisites: Admission into the BMCM degree, or permission of the instructor.

Justification: This course will provide students who are interested in pursuing musical theater performance professionally an opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary for success. This course will count as one of the seven hours of electives for students completing the performance track of the Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Commercial Music (BMCM) degree.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the creative rehearsal process of rehearsal and performance.  This outcome will be assessed via evaluation of each students classroom participation, preparation, and performance in the production at the end of the semester.

Students will improve their technique as singing actors, specifically learning how to integrate technical skills with movement, communication and interaction. This outcome will be assessed via evaluation of each students classroom participation, preparation, and performance in the production at the end of the semester.

Students will seek to find their unique voice as a performer. This outcome will be assessed via evaluation of each students classroom participation, preparation, and performance in the production at the end of the semester.

Students will demonstrate an ability to analyze and evaluate the elements of a successful performance.  This outcome will be assessed via evaluation of each students classroom participation, preparation, and performance in the production at the end of the semester.

Students will demonstrate an ability to collaborate creatively as a team to produce a professional quality production.  This outcome will be assessed via evaluation of each students classroom participation, preparation, and performance in the production at the end of the semester.


Content:
1. Rehearsal process and planning
2. Reinforcement of sound vocal technique, and the application of that technique to singing in musical theater
3. Movement and communication with an audience through song
4. Developing your own voice as a performer through writing, discussion, acting and reflection
5. Developing ones analytical ability to determine what makes a great performance on stage
6. Learning how to collaborate with a team to produce a professional level performance.
