Catalog Description: Students will gain experience performing in a percussion ensemble. This course is open to all percussionists.

Justification: Students majoring in music at NASM accredited institutions are required to participate in a variety of ensembles, including chamber music ensembles.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete this course will be able to demonstrate correct stick and hand technique on a variety of percussion instruments. This outcome will be assessed through the administration of periodic playing examinations, and through rehearsals and performance.

Students who complete this course will demonstrate mastery of standard percussion ensemble literature as selected by the instructor. This outcome will be assessed through the administration of periodic playing examinations, and through rehearsals and performance.

Students who complete this course will demonstrate improvement in speed and accuracy in their ability to learn selected literature.  This outcome will be assessed through the administration of periodic playing examinations, and through rehearsals and performance.

Students who complete this course will demonstrate musically expressive playing.  This outcome will be assessed through the administration of periodic playing examinations, and through rehearsals and performance.


Content:
Students will learn standard percussion ensemble literature from the contemporary era. In addition, students will be taught correct sticking and hand techniques on a variety of percussion instruments. They will also learn a variety of styles of music including African, Afro-Cuban, Jazz, Brazilian, and other Latin American styles.

Pedagogy Statement:
This course will be delivered via mentored rehearsals, student led rehearsals, and performances.
