Network Configuration

TCP/IP is the standard network protocol used. It stands for transport control protocol/internet protocol. Each computer has to have a unique IP address in order to connect to the local area network and the Internet. Snow College's IP address range will always begin with 144.17.x.x. The last two numbers will depend on the building location and if the computer will be using a static (always stay the same) or dynamic (changes from day to day) address.

Using the dynamic address is the simplest. This ensures that there will not be any duplicate IP addresses on the network.
To check what the IP address is on a PC, follow these instructions:

Open a command prompt by clicking the Start button.
Click All Programs.
Click the Accessories folder.
Click Command Prompt.

Once the command prompt window has opened, type this command: ipconfig /all and hit enter. This will display all network adapters with their respective IP addresses and how they received their numbers, dynamic or static.

Setting the IP address, if static addressing is preferred, it is important to know that the address you will be assigning is not in use. Check with the help desk manager before entering an IP address in the network configuration. To configure the IP address you will need to follow these steps:

Step one: Right click My Network Places.

Step two: Click properties in the popup menu.

Step three: Right click Local Area Connection.

Step four: Click properties in the popup menu.

Step five: In the middle box, scroll down until you see Internet Protocol(TCP/IP), select it and click the properties button.

Step six: Click the radio button next to Use the following IP address. Proceed to input the IP, Subnet mask, and Default gateway numbers as directed by the help desk manager.

Step seven: Click the radio button next to Use the following DNS server addresses. Proceed to input the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS server numbers as directed by the help desk manager.

Step eight: Click OK, click OK again, and close the Network Connections window.
