Special Collection Items

The Snow College Libraries’ new Special Collections room provides a dedicated and welcoming space for students, faculty, researchers, and visitors to explore unique and distinctive materials. Located in a more visible and accessible area at the library entrance, next to the library front desk, the space brings these collections closer to the College community and creates new opportunities for discovery, research, and learning.

The collections include materials related to Snow College and Utah history, unique international historical collections, and cross-disciplinary resources that support teaching, research, and student projects. Together, these materials offer opportunities to explore local and global perspectives and connect primary and distinctive resources with the College curriculum.

Faculty are encouraged to incorporate Special Collections materials into their courses and assignments, and students are invited to explore the collections for research and learning. The library will continue to develop the collections and expand opportunities for their use across disciplines.

Special Collections Use Guidelines

To help preserve Special Collections materials while making them available for research and learning, please follow these guidelines when using the room and its collections.

  • Use pencils, paper, laptops, tablets, and digital cameras.
  • Handle materials with clean, dry hands. Please wash your hands before use; hand sanitizer is not a substitute.
  • Properly support books by using a book cradle when appropriate or keeping books flat on the table.
  • Handle all materials gently.
  • Turn pages one at a time, gently from the top corners.
  • Use materials where you are visible to library staff.
  • Scan materials carefully without forcing the book spine. Ask library staff for assistance when needed.
  • Use one item at a time.
  • Ask library staff for assistance rather than risk damaging an item.
  • Leave materials for library staff to re-shelve.

  • Remove Special Collections materials from the room.
  • Place coats, bags, backpacks, or purses near collection materials.
  • Use pens, markers, highlighters, scissors, razors, or similar items.
  • Bring food, drinks, candy, gum, or water bottles into the room.
  • Lick or moisten fingers to turn pages.
  • Trace materials or take notes on top of collection items.
  • Force or flatten a book spine.
  • Use camera flash when photographing materials.

Thank you for helping us preserve these collections for future students, faculty, researchers, and visitors.
