Catalog Description: This course is a physical education activity class combining aerobic and strength training exercises utilizing the weight and aerobic machines in the fitness center at the activity center. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn the ability to use a variety of weight machines and proper training methods. Student knowledge and ability to use weight machines and proper training methods will be assessed through in-class practical exams and a final exam.

Students will be able to create their own workout plans. Student homework assignments will assess the effectiveness of individual workout plans.

Students will be able so see personal incremental growth in strength, flexibility, and endurance as they regularly attend class and perform the required exercises. Student success with incremental physical gains will be measured by tracking regular class attendance and in-class practical exams.


Content:
This course will cover Aerobic and Anaerobic training methods as well as pre and post assessments of body composition, strength, flexibility and endurance. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

In-class practical exams 20 to 30%

Homework assignments 15 to 25%

No text required. Students will be required to provide their own workout shoes.


Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught in a hands on lab which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of the how to properly use the fitness center equipment. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
