Catalog Description: This course is for first-year members of the women's intercollegiate wrestling team at Snow College. Wrestling is a sport that requires a high fitness level, and good conditioning has been shown to lead to to fewer injuries. This class is intended to put student-athletes into an optimal position so that they will be ready to wrestle during an intercollegiate season and improve their wrestling skills, leadership, and rule-based knowledge of the sport.

Prerequisites: Instructor's permission required.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Student-athletes will be able to demonstrate the skills, conditioning, and fundamentals and rules of wrestling.
 Student-athletes will be assessed through in-practice participation, conditioning skills observation, and/or assessment of their knowledge of wrestling fundamentals and rules.

Student-athletes will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with playing as a team, including work ethic and attitude.  Student-athletes will be assessed through in-class/in-practice participation, observation of leadership and/or assessment of work ethic, attitude, and teamwork.

Student-athletes will be able to explain and discuss the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Student-athletes will be assessed through in-class/in-practice oral quiz assessments on conditioning techniques and training skills.


Content:
This course will cover all the fundamentals of wrestling conditioning, wrestling skills, leadership, and knowledge of the sport's rules.
Physical Education disciplines and Snow College athletic teams value human diversity. This class/team will strive to represent that diversity in class/team materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

In-Class/Practice Participation & Conditioning Skills Observation/Assessment 30 to 40%

In-Class/Practice Observation of Leadership & Assessment of Work Ethic/Attitude & Teamwork 30 to 40%

In-Class/Practice Oral Quiz Assessments 20 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows student-athletes to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on leadership, knowlede of the rules, and conditioning. Conditioning skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities, however, participants will be expected to achieve the requirements for wrestling team conditioning.
This course/team will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve, no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
