Catalog Description: This course is designed to teach the student appropriate techniques and safety principles associated with paddle boarding, as well as experiencing yoga in a different environment. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Become familiar and comfortable on a paddle board and learn paddling essentials. In class assessment

Learn basic strokes associated with maneuvering a paddle board. In class assessment

Gain knowledge of fundamental skills, technique, terminology and philosophy related to yoga. In class assessment

Become proficient in the execution of the skills covered In class assessment

Experience a positive change in personal fitness as it relates to components such as cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, strength, coordination and agility. In class testing


Content:
Students will learn a greater appreciation of yoga through classroom lectures supplemented with paddle board yoga session held in the swimming pool.

Students will be evaluated on:

Class participation 60 to 80%

Testing 20 to 40%


Pedagogy Statement:
This is an activity class and will be taught with a small lecture portion with the majority of the course being taught in the swimming pool.
