Course Description

Weight Training is designed to help students understand the rules and strategies of weightlifting as well as help them improve their weightlifting skills and techniques. Students will learn to participate safely and effectively in weight training. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification

Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will learn proper weightlifting technique and skills.
  2. Students will learn how to create a weightlifting program.
  3. Students will see personal physical growth in the weightlifting program as the semester progresses.

Course Content

This course will cover the fundamentals of weightlifting and the skills and knowledge of using the weight room. Topics covered will include structured weightlifting, safety, the use of free and machine weights and individualized programming.
