Catalog Description: Students who take this course will be involved in the Snow College Natural Resource Club. This course will assist students in gaining a competitive edge through engagement in career exploration, leadership development, hands-on field experience, networking with professionals, and engaging in community service. This course creates learning opportunities outside of the classroom that will help solidify concepts learned in the classroom.

Justification: This course is offered with the purpose of developing leadership skills, field experience in natural resources, community awareness, professionalism, and networking. The course also provides engagement opportunities for students, which is a Snow College core theme.


Student Learning Outcomes:
The student will develop professional and organizational skills by serving as leaders by planning and carrying out club activities.  This will be assessed by planning activities and club participation.

The student will explore careers and learn the importance of networking by attending events with professionals in different natural resource fields.  This will be assessed by interacting one-on-one with at least one natural resource professional and writing a report on different career options.

The student will engage in serving the community through a natural resource-related service project.  This will be assessed by participating in at least one club service project.

The student will gain hands-on experience in natural resource- related fieldwork.  This will be assessed by club activity participation and a written summary of the experience gained in each club activity that they participated in.


Content:
Topics and experiences vary from semester to semester, although the basic objectives are the same each semester. Units of instruction and planned experiences may include but are not limited to the following:
• Field experiences working side by side with natural resource professionals
• Developing, planning, and completing service projects that benefit our local natural resources
• Fundraising and financial management
• Organizational development, including meeting agendas, minutes, and reports
• Teamwork strategies and participation

When talking about careers, instructors will use people from multiple backgrounds as examples in those careers.

Student evaluation is based on completing all of the following categories:

Club Participation 30 to 55%

Activity planning 15 to 30%

Other Assignments 30 to 50%

Pedagogy Statement:
This course is delivered through class discussion, hands-on field experiences, planning and leading in activities, reflection papers, and assignments.
Instructors will promote inclusivity by using a variety of learning exercises and assessment tools. Instructors will learn the names of each student individually. They will provide opportunities for each student to receive personalized help and feedback, using clear rubrics and explaining specific reasons when students are docked points.
