Catalog Description: This course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills and knowledge of kayaking. The course will cover proper use and care of equipment, paddling strokes and techniques, reading water flow patterns on flat and white water rivers, safety measures, and self-rescue techniques. Students must pass a swimming test. (Additional fee and field trip required).

Justification: Lifetime recreational activities such as kayak paddling develop physical skills that form the basis of a healthful life-style. This is important in a society with so many health dangers associated with sedentary life-styles. Similar courses are taught at other USHE institutions


Student Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate an understanding of kayaking terminology, which includes parts of the boat, paddle, and other associated equipment. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate proper use and care of equipment. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate proper paddling strokes, form, and technique. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate knowledge and application of reading water features on flat and white water rivers. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate buddy rescue and self-rescue techniques, such as the Eskimo roll. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate proper Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics as they relate to kayaking and riparian environments. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.
