With the millions of people who tune in to social media every day, we can make the
connections that count. Employers are turning to social media to find out information
on applicants, which is why it is important for job seekers to present themselves
in the right manner. The College Student Guide to Professional Social Profiles and
The Comprehensive Guide to Managing Social Profiles in College provide tips on what
and what not to do.
Dos and Don’ts in the social media world:
Pick a profile picture that will leave a good impression. “Be sure to choose pictures
that paint clean, friendly images of an up-and-coming professional eager to earn gainful
employment.”
Don’t post questionable photos or material. “The best rule when it comes to questionable
images [or materials] is to simply not post them.”
Use correct grammar. “While it’s tempting to be informal on social media, remember
that these platforms often serve as the first introduction to potential employers.”
Don’t complain about your current job, professors, peers, co-workers, or employers.
“Your current job may be awful and your boss may be the worst, but prospective employers
only see you as a disgruntled worker.”
Don’t’ be M.I.A. on social media. “Hiring committees want to see prospective hires
engaging with others, sharing thoughtful information, and demonstrating a passion
for their life. Being non-existent on social media can make you seem aloof.”
