When it comes to social media platforms, potential employers are finding out more
about ourselves than we would like. It is becoming more common for employers to discard
applications because of what they are seeing on our social media feeds. It is important
to clean up our accounts so that we are not one of those discarded applicants.
Step 1: Google yourself to find out what others can see about you when your name is searched.
Step 2: Once you have found all your digital dirt from googling your name, you can begin to clean up the dreadful posts that deter potential employers.
Step 3: Turn on privacy settings on your social media platforms to ensure you are keeping sensitive information private.
Step 4: Make sure that your pictures say something positive about you. Pictures should be clear, appropriate, and maintain your personal brand. A profile picture should be professional and current.
Step 5: Get rid of posts that are negative. This includes posts containing complaints, bad-mouthing a previous job or employer, or having many controversial views.
Employers are looking at your professionalism, evaluating how you would fit into the company, and learning more about your qualifications. Make your online presence work to your own advantage to ensure that potential employers will be left with positive thoughts about you.
