Catalog Description: This course focuses on the development of well-written paragraphs. The objectives of this course are to teach American thought patterns as they relate to writing in English. Students will write paragraphs using a variety of rhetorical patterns.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of ESL 0251 or placement through the department
Justification: The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). This course is part of the core curriculum for Level 2. It teaches students basic paragraph development which will allow them to successfully enter the Level 3 composition course where they will learn to combine paragraphs to write essays.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will understand the US English style of writing. Students will gain the ability to write well-developed English paragraphs with clear topic sentences, strong support, details, and conclusions. Students will demonstrate the mastery of these skills through class participation, homework, writing assignments, quizzes and tests.
Content:
Through a series of writing assignments, students will improve their writing in English by learning to write clear, well-supported paragraphs on topics that are multi-cultural and politically diverse in nature. Through homework assignments, projects, and journal writing, students will become more proficient with their written use of the English language.
Key Performance Indicators:
The following ranges will be used for the purpose of assessment. In order to pass the course, students must demonstrate a B mastery of course materials. Students who earn a grade below B (85%) will be required to repeat the course.

Pedagogy Statement:
ESL courses consist of students representing diverse cultural, linguistic, and background knowledge which serves as a resource, strength, and benefit. All students are welcomed to share their unique backgrounds and experiences while giving feedback to peers’ work, working in small groups or pairs, contributing to class discussions, or writing paragraphs with personal insights.
