Catalog Description: This course is designed to develop reading skills and vocabulary at the intermediate level. Students will read selections from the textbook and other assigned readings. They will demonstrate reading comprehension by participation in class activities and discussions and through short answer essay and objective exams.

Prerequisites: Placement in ESL 0441 through the department

Justification: The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course helps students prepare for the more difficult readings used at advanced levels.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop confidence to do basic academic reading in English. They will know how to use reading strategies to improve speed and comprehension. They will be able to use context to arrive at approximate meanings for unfamiliar words and increase their functional English vocabulary by learning to recognize and work with the meanings of many English language roots, suffixes, and affixes. Students will demonstrate the mastery of these skills through class participation, homework assignments, quizzes and tests.


Content:
Students will be assigned readings from magazines, newspapers and relevant texts that include culturally, socially, and politically diverse topics. This course will focus on improving the students' English vocabulary. Students will practice reading charts, graphs, maps, advertisements, classified ads, and indexes. Students will work on the skills of inference and prediction of outcome.

Key Performance Indicators:
The following ranges will be used for the purpose of assessment. In order to pass the course, students must demonstrate a B mastery of course materials. Students who earn a grade below B (85%) will be required to repeat the course.

Attendance and Participation 10 to 15%

Pedagogy Statement:
ESL courses consist of students representing diverse cultural, linguistic, and background knowledge which serves as a resource, strength, and benefit.
