Catalog Description: This course is designed to introduce ESL students to listening skills which are needed for aural comprehension in an academic setting. The course is a directed program which gives students practice in listening to short lectures, taking notes and developing vocabulary. Students are introduced to several English language speech patterns and the words and phrases which let the student know that a particular pattern is being used. When students recognize the context of the information they are hearing, their English listening skills improve.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of ESL 0211 or placement in ESL 0411 through the department

Justification: The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program. The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is a core course for Level 2. It introduces students to the type of listening they must do at Levels 3 and 4. It is a prerequisite for entry into Levels 3 and 4 at Snow College.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Successful students will be able to listen effectively to academic topics, demonstrate their ability to use notetaking skills and strategies (such as: abbreviations, symbols, outline), and use academic vocabulary. Students will demonstrate the mastery of the above skills through class participation, completing homework, quizzes, and tests.


Content:
This course guides students in what to listen for and how to listen in areas using different rhetorical patterns: process, classification, chronology, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, and definition.The lessons will give practice with vocabulary and facts involving diverse peoples, places, history, science, and global languages.

Key Performance Indicators:
The following ranges will be used for the purpose of assessment. In order to pass the course, students must demonstrate a B mastery of course materials. Students who earn a grade below B (85%) will be required to repeat the course.

Attendance and Participation 10 to 15%

Pedagogy Statement:
ESL courses consist of students representing diverse cultural, linguistic, and background knowledge which serves as a resource, strength, and benefit. All students are welcomed to share their unique backgrounds and experiences while giving presentations, working in small groups or pairs, contributing to class discussions, or reacting to listening passage content-based conversations with personal insights.
