Reading Response #5 See handout and instructions given in class. Reading Response #4 For your fourth reading response, read two things: 1) Find out about the This I Believe project, and 2) read one of its essays. Then write a .5 to 1 page response to the article. Your response should begin with 2-3 sentences that summarize (without plagiarizing) the belief (way of living) described in the 2nd reading. Then, in a new paragraph, explain whether or not this lesson is an important one for the world to keep in mind. Why? Are there others that are more valuable? Your response should be typed, and it will be due at the beginning of class on Thursday, Mar. 17. This assignment is worth 20 pts. Reading Response #3 For your third reading response, we will continue to practice critical reading skills. You may be aware that the Utah Legislature is in session, and lawmakers are trying to find money to help fund growth in public education especially. One proposal is to raise the sales tax rate on food (it was lowered several years ago during a good economy). Read the following editorial in the Deseret News on this issue. As you read, look for the best arguments for and against raising the tax rate. Then write a .5 to 1 page response to the article. Your response should do two things: 1) summarize the best arguments for and against raising the tax. Be sure to avoid plagiarism. Also remember that reasonable people can disagree. 2) explain which argument is most persuasive to you. Why? Your response should be typed, and it will be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Mar. 1. This assignment is worth 20 pts.
