Musicianship class:

During the daily musicianship class we deal with things that are specific to one’s instrument. All students are grouped by instrument and are with the instructor of that particular instrument. Some of the topics addressed are:

  • Warm up exercises
  • How to Practice
  • Ensemble and solo concepts
  • Music reading
  • Technique and much more
Listening sessions:

At every jazz workshop we feature a daily listening session. This is where faculty members play recordings for the students in order to discuss various ways of listening, why we like the recording, pointing out various passages and even sometimes demonstrating something from the recording on the faculty member’s respective instrument. We also provide the students with a listening list from which we will play recordings from. This information is very detailed as we want students to be aware of the names of the musicians, the leader, the song, album title, label, catalog number and when it was recorded. This is very important information for student musicians.

Jazz Theory:

On the first day, each student takes a placement test to assess his or her knowledge of music theory. Generally we create 2 to 3 levels of jazz theory (applied) in which we show the students how to apply the information in performance situations.

Special Topics:

Special topics is a daily session where faculty members discuss various things that will help the student succeed in the music business. Such topics might include the following.

  • Practice Smart, not just Hard! - Maximizing results from your practice time.
  • Expand Your Ears: Push your boundaries of listening, comprehending, imitating, assimilating and expanding musical ideas

Faculty Performance/Demo:

On Thursday and Friday the faculty will perform for the students to further demonstrate some of the information taught that day.
