Course Description

This course will strengthen English language learners' English proficiency for academic study in college and university environments. Students will become familiar with university level test format and question types while developing skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Instruction focuses on building academic vocabulary, improving grammar accuracy, and practicing integrated communication tasks similar to those on the TOEFL exam. Emphasis is placed on effective test-taking strategies and time management to help students achieve advanced high or superior proficiency level. Students will strengthen their command of CEFR B2 and C1 level vocabulary. This course is cross-listed with CED 1191 (College Preparation Integrated Skills – Continuing Education).

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College provides advanced coursework designed to prepare English language learners for success in college-level studies. ESL 1191 College Preparation Integrated Skills guides students to evaluated and assess their overall linguistic skills in four key areas of the English language namely, reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Through the demonstration of their knowledge of lectures, readings, discussions, and writing assignments, students develop the academic language and critical thinking skills necessary for effective participation in U.S. higher education.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of ESL 1191, students will be able to demonstrate improved academic reading skills by identifying main ideas, supporting details, inferences, and vocabulary in context.
  2. Upon successful completion of ESL 1191, students will be able to apply effective listening strategies to comprehend lectures and conversations, take organized notes, and answer comprehension questions accurately.
  3. Upon successful completion of ESL 1191, students will be able to produce well-organized written responses for integrated writing and speaking tasks using appropriate, grammar, vocabulary, and transitions.
  4. Upon successful completion of ESL 1191, students will be able to deliver coherent spoken responses to speaking prompts, demonstrating clear pronunciation, logical organization, and relevant supporting details.

Course Content

Instruction focuses on building advanced high grammar proficiency knowledge in students. Students will strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through focused practices with authentic TOEFL-style material. Emphasis is placed on understanding academic vocabulary, improving note-taking skills, paraphrasing and summarizing strategies, and mastering effective test-taking techniques. Grammar and sentence structure knowledge will be reviewed in context to improve clarity and accuracy in both speaking and writing tasks. Students will learn to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through completing practice tests and quizzes, working participating in class and group discussions, and completing skill area exams.
