TENA 1100 Nursing Assistant

  • Prerequisites: Participants must be at least 16 years of age on the first day of class and a junior in high school to be enrolled in the Nursing Assistant course. Preference will be given to students who are 17 years old or older. Students need to have a 3.0 GPA. A background check via BCI and a current TB test are required for clinicals. Current Covid requirements will need to be followed.

Course Description

This course focuses on the application of basic nursing skills needed to prepare students for employment as nursing assistants in a variety of healthcare settings. The course includes a combination of lectures, skill labs, and clinical experiences to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pass the state certification test. This course is a prerequisite to the nursing program (LPN) at Snow College. Course fee required.

Justification

This course is recommended by the Allied Health advisory committee and is aligned with USHE standards. State laws (OBRA) and regulations require that nursing assistants receive training in a state-approved program and show competence by successfully passing a theory and skills certification exam. The Nursing Assistant course is a prerequisite for most University/College nursing programs including Snow College. Snow College's Nursing Assistant program is approved and in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR).

  6. Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate critical thinking skills in the delivery of patient-centered care.
  7. Upon successful completion of this course, students will become certified in BLS (CPR).

Course Content

The Nursing Assistant course introduces students to basic nursing skills in a classroom and laboratory setting. This course includes 24 hours of clinical experience.Objectives:~Explain activities of daily living and the nursing assistant's scope of practice~Describe how critical criteria such as recognizing and reporting, communication, infection control, safety, and residents' rights are applied in the care setting~Demonstrate proficiency in all skills required for state certification~Perform nursing assistant skills in a healthcare setting
