Course Description
The course is designed to introduce medical surgical nursing to the student. Emphasis is on learning the nursing process and developing a plan of care that encourages health promotion and prevention across the lifespan. This course focuses on developmental challenges from birth through the geriatric population along with acute and chronic diseases/conditions affecting the geriatric patient. Additionally, this course prepares the student for long term clinical settings in various health care agencies where students will gain an awareness of the roles of other healthcare team members and community resources. This course is part of a required series to prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Justification
This course is required for the registered nurse (RN) to be successful in the field of nursing and to practice safe and competent care within the scope of practice of the RN as mandated by the Utah State Board of Nursing. Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as an important member in the health care team. This course prepares students to apply for and pass the national licensing exam.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will understand how to design age and developmentally appropriate patient centered care for all patients across the lifespan in healthcare settings.
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate basic principles of communication, teaching, and learning skills needed when relating to patients, family members, healthcare team members, classmates, and/or faculty.
