Compensation Policy Sub-committee Minutes 3-17-16

MINUTES from  3 – 17 -18

Jake agreed to run the meeting because Renee did not see the email.

Present:  Melanie Jenkins, David Allred, Scott Allred, Bradley Young, Jake Dettinger, Steve Hood, Mike Duncan, Fernando Montano

David sent out a new hire form for Faculty on Saturday.   Not everyone has seen this document.    Discussion about the points on the form and what it means.  Advertised range is where points add up.   Same point system could be used for staff.   It was pointed out that we could make these documents so it worked for all jobs.  We would need to rely on “Payscale” to do this?    We could rely on CUPA data as well.  It looks like CUPA does this.   It was suggested that we need a better checklist with points tied to this similar to what CUPA does.    When we do salary position request we should use CUPA to do this as well as Payscale.   Does it include Carnegie classification?    We could tie points to the range for that position.

There was discussion about how we figure new hire salaries.  We usually look at how people are paid now.

Other questions we posed:  How do we deal with 4 year programs?  We may have new people make more than old people do.  Is this a problem?   That person can apply, but is there money?  If we don’t hire people at market rates, our problem perpetuates.  Perhaps we can address compression AND bring in new people at the proper level.    UVU and Dixie did this a few years ago.  We need numbers to support this to get money from legislature.

Suggestion:  People move up together……hire at 30%, move everyone up to 30%  etc.   But equity funding is a one time thing…

Other questions:  Do we really need to value longevity?

Jake gave an update on this year’s salary adjustments:  The legislature approved 2% increases.  However, at Snow those on probation will get 0%. The rest will get the 2%.

Other questions   How do we deal with different pay in different disciplines? Will this lead to morale issues. Do we let market value dictate? If we give people a voice perh might not be a problem.

Jake suggested we make a document that makes a rubric new hires for next week.  Gary and David volunteered to do this.

Does CUPA already have this?  Steve suggested we look at CUPA.hr.org.

Renee will fix the minutes and email them out to the group as not everyone can access the shared drive.

Meeting adjourned at 3:22 to meet with the larger group.
