Welcome by Wayne Squire. Had a get to know you activity (two truths and a lie about yourself).
Went over the “7 Keys” homework assignment. Opened the floor to the committee for comments about the material. Craig mentioned information on page 2, “Living within guidelines” vs “Flexible” he found it was a little conflictive. Gary said the last paragraph was of interest. Wayne mentioned that the article brought out the challenges of compensation. Renee pointed out the market has to be taken into account and that we‘re not competing in the private sector. Ted said that equity is tough to do it’s not exact. Wayne said equity is what we are striving for. Brad said we need to look at the institution as a whole not just consider the income in the community. Renee responded that education might be a factor. Brad also mentioned that “Ivory Tower” misconception of our institution.
Focus then turned to FLSA (Exempt vs. Non-exempt) President Obama want to make changes to our non-exempt rule
Exempt Rule:
1. 64 hour work week
2. Does employee manage employees
3. Does employee operate and make independent decisions?
If so, then they are considered EXEMPT
The question was raised if this is really happening? Wayne made reference to the 1990’s when the I.T. guys fought for exempt status.
$450/week= under $50,000/ year= EXEMPT
Ted asked if we already have a report from PAYSCALE. Wayne responded that right now the information is 3% lower than actual and an update need to be sent. There is a plan in place that in the next 3 weeks we will be having a PAYSCALE rep. come and do a demo and show us how it works and how it will make the analysis of compensation easier.
Went over the hand out, “Compensation-Outline and Definitions”.
Went over the Glossary of Terms.
Open for questions.
Next meeting was scheduled for November 19th Thursday 3:30 P.M. (Reminders will go out)
