Catalog Description: This course is for first-year members of the men's intercollegiate football team at Snow College. This class is intended to put student athletes into an optimal position so they will be ready to play football during an intercollegiate season and improve their endurance, leadership and team skills, and rule-based knowledge of the sport. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Prerequisites: Instructor's permission required.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Additionally, physical activity has been identified as an effective treatment for depression. Students who take activity classes have improved overall college success. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled, preparing them for a lifetime of physical health. Activity courses fulfill elective requirements for all majors as well as prerequisite requirements for some teaching majors.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Student athletes will be able to demonstrate football skills and the fundamentals and rules of football.  Student athletes will be assessed through in-practice participation, as well as observation and assessment of football skills, fundamentals and knowledge of football rules.

Student athletes will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with playing as a team, including work ethic and attitude.  Student athletes will be assessed through participation, and observation/assessment of leadership, work ethic, attitude and teamwork.

Student athletes will be able to explain, discuss, and demonstrate the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Student athletes will be assessed through in-practice observations and oral assessments of football conditioning techniques and training skills.


Content:
This course will cover all the fundamentals of intercollegiate football including offense, defense, team play, special situations, and conditioning. Different approaches will be utilized to maximize learning and optimal training for all student athletes. The Exercise Science Department and Snow College value the success of all students. This class will strive to help students succeed through class materials and course content including examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Participation  20 to 40%

Instructor Assessment and Observation of skills, fundamentals, rules, and conditioning 30 to 40%

Instructor Evaluation/Observation of Leadership and Teamwork  30 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab, which allows student athletes to learn and practice skills as well as be assessed on leadership and teamwork, knowledge of the rules of football, and conditioning. Conditioning skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities; however, participants will be expected to achieve the requirements for football team competition. This course will promote student success by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve one's self.
