Catalog Description: In this course students will learn to swim. They will gain experience and comfortably display the five basic swimming strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. Students will also learn to dive from the bank and low-board. They will be taught to swim fully clothed and use their clothes as a flotation device. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Prerequisites: None

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn and demonstrate the five basic swimming strokes and the proper breathing techniques for each stroke. Students will be assessed through homework assignments, in-pool practicum, and final exam.

Students will learn and demonstrate basic diving techniques and diving safety.  Students will be assessed through homework assignments, in-pool practicum, and final exam.

Students will be able to explain and discuss how to be safe in, out, and around water, including the use of emergency water lifesaving techniques.  Students will be assessed through class participation, homework assignments, and final exam.

Students will be able to demonstrate emergency water lifesaving techniques. Students will be assessed through in-pool practicum.


Content:
This course will teach students to swim and gain experience and knowledge in the following areas: Skills and techniques of swimming the the five basic swimming strokes (front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke)Diving basicsSafety in and out of the waterPhysical Education disciplines value human diversity. This course will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, class discussions, etc.

Homework assignments 10 to 20%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught primarily in the lab (pool) which allows the students to learn and practice swimming and diving skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of swimming, diving, and water safety. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
