Catalog Description: This physical education activity class is designed to help students understand the rules and strategies of volleyball, to help them improve their skills, and play safely and effectively. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
During this course, students will learn the rules and strategies of playing volleyball.  Student's knowledge of volleyball rules and strategies will be assessed via a written exam.

Students will demonstrate knowledge and performance of basic volleyball skills. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of volleyball skills and be able to demonstrate basic volleyball skills through pre and post skills testing at the beginning and end of the semester.

Students will be able to develop increased volleyball skills through routinely tracked practice. Volleyball skills gains will be measured by gauging regular attendance and pre and post skills testing.


Content:
This course will cover the fundamentals of volleyball, skills, and knowledge of the sport's rules. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Pre and Post Testing 30 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of the rules of volleyball. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
