Catalog Description: This class is intended for first year members of the Snow College Women's Intercollegiate Wrestling Team. This is the first level of wrestling instruction and competition for women. Participants will learn basic techniques. skills, rules, and leadership that will allow them to compete effectively at the college level.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Student-athletes will be able to demonstrate the skills, fundamentals and rules of wrestling. Student-athletes will be assessed through on-mat skills testing and assessment for performance of rules and fundamentals.

Student-athletes will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with participating as a member of a team, including work ethic and attitude. Student-athletes will be assessed through on-mat/in-practice participation, observation of leadership and/or assessment to measure work ethic, attitude, and teamwork.

Student-athletes will be able to explain and discuss the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Student-athletes will be assessed through written testing and quizzes measuring knowledge of physical conditioning techniques and training skills.


Content:
This course will cover the fundamentals of women's intercollegiate wrestling. Through practice and competition, team members will be instructed in wrestling skills, rules, leadership, conditioning, and training.
Physical Education disciplines and Snow College athletic teams value human diversity. This team/class will strive to represent that diversity in team/class materials and course content through examples, discussions, etc.

Students will be evaluated on:

On-mat skills testing 20 to 30%

On-mat/in-practice participation, observation of leadership, and/or assessment of work ethic, attitude, and teamwork. 40 to 60%

Written tests and quizzes 20 to 30%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows the students to learn about participating and competing on a college level sports team.
This course/team will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve, no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
