Catalog Description: Math 100R is part of Snow College’s math placement process; for students who desire to review math topics in order to improve placement level before beginning a math course. This course addresses unique strengths and weaknesses of students from diverse backgrounds by providing each student with an individual assessment and study plan for mastering target material. This course requires mandatory class attendance and a minimum number of hours per week logged into a preparation module. Math 100R may be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits toward graduation. May be graded credit/no credit.

Justification: This course is for students who desire to review math topics in order to improve placement level before beginning a math course.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate improved problem-solving ability in identified areas of mathematics. This outcome will be assessed through problems in an individualized Aleks PPL Learning module and through a placement exam.

Communicate full and cogent solutions, including appropriate justification, to problems in target areas of mathematics. This outcome will be assessed through problems in an individualized Aleks PPL Learning module and through a placement exam.

Explain essential concepts in desired areas of mathematics. This outcome will be assessed through problems in an individualized Aleks PPL Learning module and through a placement exam.

Demonstrate improved skill in desired areas of mathematics. This outcome will be assessed through problems in an individualized Aleks PPL Learning module and through a placement exam.

Demonstrate readiness for target mathematics courses. This outcome will be assessed through problems in an individualized Aleks PPL Learning module and through a placement exam.


Content:
Math 100R addresses unique strengths and weaknesses of students from diverse backgrounds by providing each student with an individual assessment and study plan for mastering target material. Students will spend a minimum of 6 hours per week working in a Prep and Learning Module in Aleks PPL. This will provide an efficient way to do a targeted review of the particular topics just beyond the boundary of a student's current understanding.

Key Performance Indicators:
Students who meet the following requirements will receive credit for this course:

*Complete an Inital Aleks PPL Assessment
*Attend class on a regular basis
*Complete a total of 6 hours per week in the Aleks PPL Prep and Learning Modules
*Complete a final proctored Aleks PPL Assessment

Attendance is mandatory. Missing the first day of class automatically results in NC (No Credit) grade for the course. Missing any other class period will result in 2 hours being added to the time requirement in ALEKS. Arriving to class more than 10 minutes late or leaving more than 10 minutes early is counted as an absence.

Pedagogy Statement:
Students will learn the desired materials in this course by working in the Prep and Learning Module in ALEKS PPL for a minimum of 6 hours per week. Two of those hours will be spent in a class meeting with an instructor and peer tutor(s) who will answer questions as well as provide guidance and encouragement. The instructor will also be available between meetings to answer student questions via email, Canvas messaging and office hours. This individual attention will provide a sense of belonging and confidence to each student.
