Catalog Description: This capstone course will allow students to use skills that they have learned in previous GIS courses to complete a series of applied projects using geographic information systems. Each project will require the student to creatively develop a presentable solution to a problem. Each project will be based on essential skills used in the workforce and the interest of the student.

Credit/Time Requirement: Credit: 3; Lecture: 3; Lab: 0

Prerequisites: GEO 1820 (may be taken concurrently)

Justification: This course is required for the GIS certificate. As a final applied class, students will have the opportunity to show the valuable skills they have learned in previous GIS courses. Each project may be added to a portfolio to show the skills and competency of the student.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to develop solutions to complex GIS problems. This will be demonstrated through each capstone project.

Students will be able to present findings appropriately through written reports and maps. This will be demonstrated through each capstone project.


Content:
Course content will vary based on the research interests of each student. However, all students completing the course will use higher level GIS, research and data collecting skills from previous GIS courses. Projects will be approved by instructor to ensure appropriate depth of content and skill levels are met. Capstone project allows students to choose topics that help them find place as an identity.

Course instruction will include one on one help sessions with the instructor, video lectures, and class collaboration. The instructor will strive to deliver the course in a way that allows each student the opportunity to receive help, feedback, and instruction in a personalized manner--seeking to meet the needs of each student and allow each to understand the principles taught and practiced.
