English as a Second Language

ESL 250 is the Beginning Writing Course for English as a Second Language. Students will practice writing skills with a combination of Creative Writing and expository writing. Students will be required to write in a journal daily and do additional writing tasks. Students will be expected to come to class with their homework prepared, because the homework is usually an essential part of the next day's lesson.This course will give practice and teach students the organizational rules of writing in English. The class will prepare students to take ESL 450.

COURSE GRADES: In order to pass this course the student must have a 3.0 (85%) or better. The grade will be figured from the following areas:

 

  • Free write: Students will be given 5 - 10 minutes on a regular basis to write on anything, or on a specific topic. The grade will be based on the thoughts conveyed rather than on grammar and organization. (no rewrites, no make-ups)
  • Journals: Students are required to have a journal everyday in class. Every night there will be homework assignments are to be completed in the journals. The teacher will check the journals from time to time.
  • Tests: There will be several tests during the quarter.
  • Quizzes: Unannounced quizzes will be given regularly. There is no makeup if you are late or absent.

 

Attendance in class is required. Your grade will come from participation, papers you write and tests. 

 

No Finals will be given early.
