Course Policies Regular attendance is required. A student who misses class three times will be dropped from the roster. Exceptions will be made on an individual basis. Assigned work is required. A student who fails to submit 10% of graded work will be dropped from the roster. Exceptions will be made on an individual basis. Active and courteous participation is required. This refers to the ability to answer questions, a willingness to join discussions, active participation in groupwork and classroom exercises, respect for ones classmates, timely arrival, unwavering attention, and general politeness. It means doing your homework and coming to class with the appropriate materials. It means coming to class AFTER you have eaten. A student whose participation is consistently substandard will be dropped from the roster. Exceptions will be made on an individual basis. Cell phones, iPods, and most other electronic devices MAY NOT be used in class. They are very distracting and in some cases can be used to cheat. Turn such devices off BEFORE you enter the classroom. A student who habitually fails to do so will be dropped from the roster. (E.g., if your cell phone rings during class, expect some heavy consequences.) An exception will be made for audio recorders when they are used to record class presentations and discussion. Other exceptions will be made on an individual basis. If you wish to drop this (or any) course, or if I have dropped you from the roster, you must submit a signed Change of Program Card to the Registrars Office. It is not enough simply to stop attending class. Failure to submit your card by the appropriate deadline will result in a failing grade for the course. I will gladly sign cards before class or after class but not during class. Late writing assignments will be accepted ONLY in cases of EXTREME personal hardship. If a situation arises that makes it impossible for you to submit an assignment by the date and time specified on the course schedule, you should confer with me in person, by phone, or by email as soon as possibleideally BEFORE the due date. Field trips and sporting events ordinarily DO NOT COUNT as legitimate reasons for submitting late work. Submit affected assignments early rather than late. Confer with me whenever possible. Quizzes (especially in literature courses) CANNOT be made up. It is your responsibility to keep track of the class schedule, assignments, due dates, etc. I will do my best to remind you of such things, but my failure to do so is no excuse for missing an assignment or doing the wrong homework. Managing your own work and time is YOUR responsibility. Unless otherwise specified, all assignments written OUTSIDE class must be typed or word-processed. Follow the Typing Guidelines exactly. You should also photocopy your assignments and/or save them to a computer disk or flash drive for security. Occasionally I misplace an assignment. If this seems to be the case, I will ask you to submit a duplicate (for full credit) as soon as possible. Do not abuse this policy. I will post your grades on my Snow College home page: <www.snow.edu/jeffc>. Your grades will be associated with your student ID number. This will ensure your privacy. I will try to update your grades once a week. If you notice an error in your grades, notify me at once. Trained writing tutors are available in the Writing Lab (149 Humanities) for help with your essays. All students are encouraged to visit a tutor on a regular basis (1-2 times FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT). Seeking tutorial help is a self managed part of the regular English curriculum. Tutoring hours are posted by the Writing Lab. Every student should read about plagiarism. If you still do not understand the nature of plagiarism and its penalties, you should confer with me at once. Every student should read and understand the college's Academic Honesty Policy as it is printed in the school catalog. The consequences of cheating can be severe, especially for repeat offenders. Students with medical, psychological, learning or other disabilities desiring accommodations, academic adjustments, or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Accessibility Resource Center, room 211 Greenwood Center, phone number (435) 283-7321. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator at the Accessibility Resource Center (ACR) determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of appropriate services and aids. |
