Catalog Description: In this class, students will learn basic and advanced techniques of nail care and design. The students will also demonstrate proper infection control procedures on clients and practice proper massage manipulations on clients. The students will also study and practice passing the state board exams at the minimum standard of 70%. The Nail Technology program can be taken alone or as part of the Cosmetology/Barbering program.

Practice and lab experiences include client consultation; manicuring; pedicuring; application of nail tips, wraps, gel, and acrylic enhancements; polishing techniques; nail art; and salon management. A required lab fee includes a one-time rental of a state board testing kit. This fee is non-refundable.

Justification: This course is essential in providing salon experience for the student and will provide additional support for them to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Licensure Examination (NIC test). This is a requirement for licensure through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing of Utah.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Practice and learn the importance of safety, sanitary nail care, and infection control on both
equipment and clients. Students will be assessed on all practical work done on a skills pass-off sheet, on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Practical exams are given at the conclusion of each semester.

Master fingernail extensions, basic spa manicures, and pedicures. Students will be assessed weekly on sanitation and disinfection processes using skill pass-off sheets. All task lines will be graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will be reassessed until a pass is achieved. This will be accomplished by the students working on manikin hands and clients

Discuss and demonstrate proper muscle massage manipulations learned from anatomy courses. Students will be assessed as they perform a client consultation at the beginning of each service. Demonstrate the safe use of electric files being used on natural and artificial nails Students will be assessed as they perform a client consultation at the beginning of each service. We strive to introduce all students to the procedures performed in the beauty industry and all them to express their differences and culture through creative projects and group activities. The course is designed to empower and foster talent in all students, including groups traditionally underrepresented in this career, and to move beyond stereotypes.

Representative Text and/or Supplies:
8th edition Milady Standard Nail Technology textbook, and CIMA 1-year Access Card. (both are required for class)

Supplemental materials may be required.


Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include group work, practical application, client services, front desk experience, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom/lab atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments and practical experience with clients as they perform procedures involved in the nail technology industry.
