Catalog Description: Barbering is an exciting component in the Cosmetology/Barbering program. Imagine days from the old west, where a gentlemen could get a straight razor shave. This is just one of the services a student will learn in this lab course. This course provides in-depth practical experience in learning and achieving advanced techniques in all areas essential to becoming a successful cosmetologist/barber. Students perform services in a salon setting. This course has a service learning component.

Prerequisites: COSB 1000 COSB 1005, COSB 1015, COSB 1100, COSB 1200, COSB 1205, COSB 1215; and COSB 2300, COSB 2305, COSB 2505 (the three of these can be taken concurrently).

Justification: Students taking this course will be involved in performing advanced technical services in the salon. (second-year afternoon lab)

This course is required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. The course content will give the practical experiences necessary to help prepare students to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Licensure Examination (NIC test).


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will perform the principles and practices related to cosmetology/barbering skills; i.e., general hair care, styling, haircutting, straight razor shaving, hair extensions, chemical texture services, haircoloring, skin and nail care services and other material essential to becoming a successful cosmetologist/barber. Students will be assessed on all practical work done on a skills pass-off sheet, on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Practical exams are given at the conclusion of each semester.

Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control. Students will recognize potential safety hazards and implement accepted methods to mitigate those hazards.  Students will be assessed weekly on sanitation and disinfection processes using skill pass-off sheets. All task lines will be graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will be reassessed until a pass is achieved.

Students will be able to evaluate and communicate client needs, determine the action needed, maintain client records, and use professional ethics relevant to the salon business. Students will be assessed as they perform a client consultation at the beginning of each service. The outcome of the service is determined by a satisfied client. Instructors check work, give feedback, and make any correction at the time of the service.

Students will exhibit professionalism as they complete and present their Fashion Fusion Project.  Students will be assessed on design write-up, music choice, costume design, and hairstyle and make-up that supports their theme. Instructors and Alumni judges score their completed presentation.

Students will be able to serve in the community as they provide services to the elderly in local care centers, involved in club activities, and teaching hygiene classes to youth groups.  Students will be assessed as they perform community service. Credit for time rendered will be included in their weekly service grade.


Content:
Course objectives will be accomplished by providing students with learning experiences in the following subject areas:

-maintaining a clean working environment
-hair and scalp analysis, and electrotherapy treatments
-haircutting techniques, using clippers, razor and shears
-chemical texture advanced wrapping techniques
-hair color and bleach applications
-hairstyling, including thermal, roller sets and braiding
-wig care, hair extensions and hairpiece care
-straight razor shaving, beard and mustache trimming
-facials, and removal of unwanted hair using wax and tweeze
-manicures, pedicures, and artificial nail applications
-men specific manicures, pedicures and facials
-first aid techniques for cuts, burns, and other emergencies
-communication skills, appointment booking, phone skills
-community involvement, services at local care centers

We strive to introduce all students to the procedures performed in the beauty industry, allowing them to express their differences and cultures through creative projects and group activities. The course is designed to empower and foster talent in all students, including groups traditionally underrepresented in this career, and to move beyond stereotypes. Students have an opportunity to complete services on a variety of clients from diverse backgrounds.

Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include demonstration, class discussion, practical application, community service, group work, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom/lab atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments and practical experience with clients as they perform procedures involved in the beauty industry.
