Five-Year Syllabus Review Instructions

The Curriculum Committee (CC) has done an audit of syllabus review dates, and it has been five years since some syllabi were reviewed and placed on the web. We are hoping that the current five-year review process will be relatively easy.

Procedure

Curriculum Committee representatives will contact chairs of departments with lists of syllabi due for review. When logged in to the syllabus database, syllabi due for five-year review are indicated by a red letter "A"

Have faculty members carefully review assigned syllabi. Make sure that General Education (GE) Outcomes and Applied Education Outcomes (AE) match Outcomes, Content, and Outcomes Assessment on the syllabus. Some syllabi were revised with the idea that the more Outcomes included the better. As the syllabus review process went forward, it was agreed that sometimes "less is more," so watch for syllabi that may include Outcomes that are not clearly a focus of the course as described or clearly assessed in the course.

Statements for GE and AE Outcomes should describe a feedback loop for how the outcome is met and assessed. The Outcomes Assessment section should include percentages for each type of assessment and the following statement: "Percentages are approximate OrAt the discretion of the instructor, the following assessment measures may be used:" and descriptions of possible assessment measures.

Instructions for Editing Syllabi

  1. Review the latest version of the syllabus online (). If your username has not been set up, contact your CC representative.
  2. To revise a syllabus, make a copy of the syllabus by opening the old syllabus in "My Syllabi" and clicking "Click to Edit" then "Create a Copy of prefix number" at the top of the screen. Only make one copy, and go back to that copy in "My Syllabi" during the revision process.
  3. More detailed guidelines and instructions for creating a new syllabus, or revising a syllabus, can be found in the COURSE SYLLABUS GUIDELINES AND TEMPLATE document. See the syllabus database login page for a copy.
  4. Once copied, you can edit by clicking "edit " next to the course prefix and number in "My Syllabi." Make modifications and click "Save Changes" at the top of the screen. When you are satisfied with the revised syllabus, click "Submit for Approval" on the "My Syllabi" page. This action will change the status of the syllabus to "P" (pending) and others may review the syllabus.
  5. Syllabi due for five-year review must be approved by division and department chairs. New syllabi must go through a full review process that includes at least a two-week review period by members of your division.
  6. Print a copy of the syllabus and get all signatures indicated on the signature page. (Only the Ephraim or Richfield campus librarian's signature is required.) Give the syllabus to your Curriculum Committee representative for presentation to and final approval by the Curriculum Committee.
  7. See your CC representative with any questions.
