Catalog Description: This course includes intermediate level sewing techniques. Students use domestic sewing machines and sergers to construct projects., including those that are designed to provide experience with service learning and sustainability.. A portion of this class is individualized to allow students to build skills from their own level of competency. This course may be repeated for credit.

Justification: Sewing is a valuable life skill. This class provides instruction on how to repair, repurpose and reuse textile items. It promotes satisfaction as a result of sewing for humanitarian aid. It gives students skills that may be transferred to entrepreneurial endeavors. It gives students an option for an elective course. This class in combination with HFST 1140 is similar to FCSE 1140 at USU.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will complete a project that incorporates required intermediate sewing skills. Each student will make the same item and will be instructed as a group. Students will be assessed on the completion of the project and the quality of the work.
Students will complete Service Learning projects. Students will be assessed by the completion and quality of these projects and by the number of hours that they sew.
Students will learn skills that will contribute to sustainable living and management of textile waste. They will be assessed by the completion of projects that involve mending, altering or repurposing textile items.
Because sewing skills can only be developed through practice, students will be given the opportunity to work on projects that are appropriate for their skill level, and that will contribute to their improvement. Through consultation with the instructor, projects will be selected and completed by the student. Students will be assessed by the completion and quality of their projects and the number of hours that they sew.
Content:
Demonstration of intermediate sewing skills and techniques such as collars, cuffs and waistbands, continuous lap, flat-felled and French seams, blind hem, sewing with knits and serger threading. Completion of student projects incorporating intermediate sewing techniques. Experience mending, altering or repurposing textile items.Completion of Service Learning project.Individualized instruction as needed by students as they practice their sewing skills.

Students are required to purchase their own supplies (i.e. fabric, thread, notions).
Pedagogy Statement:
Students will be taught using group demonstrations and individualized instruction. There are many skills that can be discussed and demonstrated using a camera and projecting the image onto a large screen TV. Points are awarded for attendance at group lecture/demonstrations.
