Course Description
This course provides students an introduction to computer-aided drafting. The course is based around a computer-aided design software package which is common to the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries (e.g. Solidworks). Students work in teams to develop and design engineering solutions.
Justification
This course is required for students majoring in mechanical engineering, biological engineering, manufacturing engineering, and industrial design. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of graphical design procedures used in engineering applications. The course will provide students the fundamental knowledge necessary to visually represent the engineering process. Students will utilize these skills in subsequent engineering courses and when they enter the workforce as engineers. This course is most similar to BENG 1200 and MAE 1200 at Utah State University and MEEN 1000 at the University of Utah.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to to sketch drawings utilizing technical drafting techniques.
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to develop the skills to communicate engineering designs through drawings that correctly incorporate industry standards.
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to develop digital models of engineering designs through computer-aided-design software.
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to learn and practice working in teams to design and construct engineering solutions.
Course Content
Topics covered in this course may include:
• Engineering design process
• Design layout including multi-view and orthographic projections
• Solid model design creation using a computer-aided design software package (e.g. Solidworks)
• The creation of parts, assemblies, and drawings
• Dimensioning and tolerancing standards including GD&T
• Dynamic simulation in a computer-aided design software package (e.g. Solidworks)
• Rendering and animation techniques related to the design
• Prototyping using 3D printers, shop equipment, and CNC machinery
